Sublocade Shot + Side Effects

It is very challenging to overcome opioid use disorder (OUD) and avoid relapses on one’s recovery journey. As we learn more about OUD, there have been some breakthroughs in the different types of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) options to help address cravings and withdrawal symptoms. One such option that can help people maintain their newly found opioid-free lifestyle is Sublocade. Before starting this medication, it is essential to learn more about the Sublocade shot and side effects.

What Is Sublocade and What Is It Used For?

Sublocade is an FDA-approved medication that is used with evidence-based medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help treat moderate to severe opioid use disorder (OUD). It is the brand name for a prescription medication that contains buprenorphine. Unlike buprenorphine, which is taken daily in tablet form, Sublocade is a monthly injection. Sublocade is used to help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms experienced when quitting opioids.

How Does the Sublocade Shot Work?

The Sublocade shot is administered monthly and injected just under the skin. The liquid turns into a gel once under the skin. Its extended time release formula releases a small amount of the medication daily.

Once Sublocade reaches the brain, it binds with opioid receptors to block the effects of other opioids. So, if someone were to relapse while on Sublocade, they would not experience the euphoric and pleasurable effects. The drug also helps alleviate cravings for opioids and reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms, making it easier to manage one’s recovery successfully.

Sublocade Shot and Side Effects

As with other MAT medications, some people can experience side effects from Sublocade shots. Not everyone will experience side effects. Generally, for those that do, they subside and are only short-term as the body adjusts to the drug. However, it is crucial to report any experienced side effects to the healthcare provider administering the shots as soon as possible.

Some of the more common side effects from a Sublocade shot one may experience are:

  • Headaches
  • Lack of energy/sleepiness
  • Injection site reactions
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels

Sublocade can also have some serious side effects people should be aware of, such as:

  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulties breathing
  • Slurred speech
  • Cognitive impairments

It is vital to report the serious side effects immediately. Additionally, people should not drink alcohol or use any opioids while on Sublocade, including prescription and over-the-counter medications containing alcohol or opioids.

Sublocade vs. Vivitrol

Sublocade is classified as a partial opioid agonist that contains buprenorphine. Vivitrol is another monthly injection used to treat OUD and address cravings. It contains naltrexone and blocks the effects of opioids. Vivitrol is also administered to treat alcohol use disorder (AUD). Due to their differences, Sublocade and Vivitrol cannot be used together.

Sublocade vs. Suboxone

Suboxone is another FDA-approved MAT medication used to treat OUD. It also contains buprenorphine but also contains naloxone. The primary difference is in how the drug is administered. Instead of monthly shots, Suboxone is taken daily orally on a dissolving film. Because it is taken daily, it can cause people to feel variations in its effectiveness throughout the day. Sublocade, on the other hand, provides the convenience of only having to get a shot once a month.

How Long Does Sublocade Stay in Your System?

Sublocade’s half-life ranges between 40 to 60 days, depending on the individual. In order to ensure the drug remains effective, shots are administered once a month. Most people achieve a steady state of extended release after receiving injections between four and six months. Upon discontinuation of Sublocade, it could take up to 12 months before the drug is fully removed from the body.

How Effective Is Sublocade?

In one clinical study over a 24-week period, 30% of the participants taking Sublocade and receiving other therapy and counseling did not take any other opioids for 80% of the study’s duration. In a year-long study of 206 participants, 88% reported improved quality of life, employment rates, and overall satisfaction with the medication.
