What is TRICARE?

TRICARE connects the healthcare resources of the Military Health System (MHS) with a network of civilian healthcare professionals and institutions. The Military Health System is a global, integrated system. Members can access care from military facilities, a civilian network of providers, or TRICARE-authorized non-network providers.

Does TRICARE Cover Addiction Treatment?
Yes, TRICARE covers treatment for substance use disorders for all TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries. In addition, they also cover the management of withdrawal symptoms during detoxification. In some cases, a referral or pre-authorization may be required for certain outpatient services.

Does TRICARE Insurance Cover Mental Health Treatment?
Yes, TRICARE covers mental health treatment. Mental health disorders have a high prevalence of co-occurring with substance use disorders.
TRICARE-covered mental health services fall under similar guidelines as substance use disorder treatment coverage. As such, mental health services and treatments may be subject to exclusion, pre-authorization, certain rules, and limits.
Some of the mental health services TRICARE may cover include:
- Psychotherapy
- Psychological testing and assessment
- Acute inpatient psychiatric care
- Medication management
- Telehealth services
As mentioned above, preauthorization and exclusions may apply. Services must be deemed medically or psychologically necessary. With a dual diagnosis, some mental health and substance use disorder treatments go hand and hand.

Will I Have a Co-pay or Cost Share With My Tricare Plan?
All TRICARE plans have a maximum allowable charge that TRICARE will pay a provider for a service. Non-participating providers may charge up to 15% over the allowable amount. The allowable rate may vary in some places since healthcare costs can be more or less depending on location. Also, in some cases, federal law requires a set rate.
All TRICARE plans, besides active duty service members, have a cost share. This is the percentage of the covered healthcare service the member must pay. In addition, some plans have a yearly deductible that must be met before TRICARE begins to cost-share.
